League One roundup: Coventry City climb up to second place

There are new joint-leaders in League One as Gillingham and Coventry City overtake Walsall and Burton Albion on another dramatic day in the third tier.

Coventry City bounced back from a goal behind at Colchester United to win 3-1 and claim a place in the League One automatic promotion zone.

The Sky Blues, who were down in fourth heading into the latest round of fixtures, had two Jacob Murphy goals to thank for cancelling out Macauley Bonne's opener.

Marc-Antoine Fortune sealed things early on in the second half for Coventry at the Colchester Community Stadium to make it eight league games without defeat for his side.

City are level on points with Gillingham at the top, who themselves had to recover from an early setback to claim a 3-1 victory against Bury.

Leon Clarke fired the visitors ahead just four minutes in, but the division's high-flyers soon struck back with two quick-fire goals to drag themselves into top spot.

Walsall and Burton Albion are the big losers of the day, slipping down from first and second respectively due to their fixtures being postponed.

That provided a chance for Wigan Athletic to make some ground, which they duly did by seeing off Rochdale 2-0 in the day's early kickoff in League One.

Elsewhere, Bradford City now find themselves level on points with Bury just outside the playoff zone after seeing off bottom side Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at Valley Parade, while Sheffield United remain two points further back following a 2-2 draw with Southend United.

The Blades found themselves two goals down inside the opening half-hour at Bramall Lane, before hitting back prior to the interval through Jose Baxter and Neill Collins.

At the opposite end of the table, Doncaster Rovers came out on top in their big meeting with Blackpool thanks to two first-half strikes which the struggling Seasiders failed to recover from.

Neil McDonald's find themselves inside the relegation zone as a result of a third league defeat on the bounce, while Fleetwood Town and Barnsley also remain in deep trouble following respective losses to Peterborough United and Port Vale.

Results in full (half-time scores in brackets): Barnsley 1-2 Port Vale (0-1), Blackpool 0-2 Doncaster Rovers (0-2), Bradford City 2-0 Crewe Alexandra (1-0), Chesterfield 1-2 Oldham Athletic (1-0), Colchester United 1-3 Coventry City (1-2), Gillingham 3-1 Bury (2-1), Peterborough United 2-1 Fleetwood Town (0-0), Sheffield United 2-2 Southend United (2-2), Swindon Town 2-1 Scunthorpe United (0-0)
