Wayne Rooney is reportedly in talks with Derby County over the prospect of assuming a player-manager role at the Championship side.

Wayne Rooney has reportedly entered talks with Derby County over the prospect of taking up a player-coach role at the Championship side.

The Rams appointed former Barcelona midfielder Phillip Cocu as manager after Frank Lampard moved to Chelsea, but they are understood to be keen on adding a senior player who can work for and play under the Dutchman.

Rooney left England last year to join DC United and has enjoyed a superb spell in the MLS, scoring 25 goals in 44 appearances.

Yet according to The Telegraph, Rooney could be set for a return to England after his agent Paul Stretford and Derby held talks regarding a potential move, with more meetings expected to happen this week.

Derby owner Mel Morris wants to follow the Lampard template once again after the Rams reached the playoff final last season, and he views England and Manchester United's all-time top goalscorer as an ideal candidate for the role.

Rooney, who has 16 months left on his current contract with DC United, has spoken on numerous occasions of his desire to enter management one day.
