United took the lead after 11 minutes, with Brian McLean heading in a Barry Douglas cross from close range.
However, the lead was short-lived as James McAlister grabbed an equaliser for the hosts eight minutes later, firing the ball in from the edge of the penalty area.
The visitors edged ahead towards the end of the first half, as Gary Mackay-Steven drove the ball in from inside the box.
Radoslaw Cierzniak had to make a series of saves at the start of the second half as Dundee pushed for an equaliser.
Stuart Armstrong and Douglas both had chances to score a third for United, but neither was able to beat Rab Douglas.
