England are on course to qualify for the Euro 2012 quarter-finals after withstanding a lively Ukraine to enter the break 0-0 in Donetsk.

England are on course for Euro 2012 quarter-final qualification after entering the break 0-0 with Ukraine in their decisive Group D match in Donestk tonight.

A point will take Roy Hodgson's side through to the last eight, where they would face Italy or Spain, at the expense of the co-hosts.

The Three Lions spent much of the first half on the back foot, but created the best chance of the opening period for a returning Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United striker, who was recalled by Hodgson after missing the first two group games through suspension, headed wide from six yards after being found unmarked by club teammate Ashley Young.

Former captain John Terry also sent a headed effort off target, but the rest of the chances fell the way of a lively Ukrainian side.

Both Marko Devic and Yevhen Konoplyanka saw their early strikes blocked by Scott Parker and Terry respectively, before Joe Hart was called upon to firstly deny Oleg Gusev from long range, and then Andriy Yarmalenko's bending left-footed effort.
