Wayne Rooney says that he was scared of being left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad.

England striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that there was a point where he feared he would miss out on Euro 2012.

The Manchester United forward sat out the Three Lions' matches with France and Sweden through suspension but will start Tuesday's game with Ukraine.

However, the 26-year-old was initially suspended for all of England's Group D games and was scared he might not earn selection for the squad before the punishment was reduced to a two-match ban.

"What happened was a mistake and I've paid the price. I'm happy and ready to play. I've been looking forward to it and now I'm available to play I'm excited," said Rooney.

"When it was a three-game ban I thought I probably wouldn't be here. I'm happy that I am here."

England need a point against co-hosts Ukraine tonight to earn qualification to the quarter-finals.
