Robbie Savage criticises Gareth Southgate's penalty suggestions

Robbie Savage rubbishes claims from Gareth Southgate that the England squad would benefit from seeking professional help regarding the failure at penalties.

Robbie Savage has hit back at suggestions made by Gareth Southgate that the current England squad would benefit from seeing a sports psychologist to get over their failings during recently penalty shootouts.

England's latest loss on penalties came during the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 against Italy last weekend.

The defeat had prompted former England centre-back Southgate to claim that professional help may be the best route for the players.

However, Savage has rubbished the idea, while instead insisting that former internationals should be drafted into the coaching setup to help the Three Lions retain possession.

"Now according to Southgate England need a psychologist because of penalty trauma? Seriously come on Gareth! Really?" he posted on Twitter. "Neville, Scholes, Hargreaves this is who England need not psychologists leave it out Gareth.

"Don't need a pyscologist putting anchors in your head or telling you how good you are!! And england wonder why they are where they are?

"F.A need people like Neville , Beckham , Scholes , Hargreaves. Young, enthusiastic talented players who know how to pass and keep the ball."

England have only won one penalty shootout at a major tournament.
