Wayne Rooney admits Las Vegas mistake

England striker Wayne Rooney regrets his pre-Euro 2012 trip to Las Vegas and warns his teammates to stay local before jetting off to Euro 2016.

Wayne Rooney has insisted that he will not take a holiday before England's Euro 2016 campaign next summer, claiming to have learned his lesson from three years ago.

Suspended for the Three Lions' first two Euro 2012 games, the Manchester United striker was photographed in Las Vegas with his family one week before he scored the winner on his return in a group game against Ukraine.

In retrospect, the 30-year-old - now the captain - admits that he was wrong to take the long-haul trip, and warns his teammates that they will not be venturing too far.

"At the time I thought it was no problem and now I know I obviously shouldn't have done it," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "It's flights and jet-lag.

"I was there with my family, but flying so far it takes a while to get over the jet-lag. Maybe not having a long break between the season finishing is probably the best thing.

"I don't think we'll have that long off before the tournament so the lads won't have the option to go too far."

England, who were eliminated by Italy at the quarter-final stage on penalties, booked their place in France next summer with a 6-0 demolition of San Marino on Saturday.
