Steven Gerrard eyes David Beckham record

England captain Steven Gerrard acknowledges that it would be an "unbelievable achievement" to beat David Beckham's record tally of 115 caps for an outfield player.

England captain Steven Gerrard has set his sights on reaching David Beckham's record tally of 115 international appearances.

Gerrard is currently on 109 caps for the Three Lions and would equal Beckham as the most-capped outfield player in England history if he appears in all of the World Cup warm-up matches as well as the three group games in Brazil.

The 33-year-old has outlined his intention to make a decision on his international future after the World Cup, but believes that it would be an "unbelievable achievement" to reach Beckham's record.

"To get close to David Beckham, to match him, or to go ahead of him would be an unbelievable achievement," Gerrard told reporters.

"He's a hero of mine, I was lucky enough to play with him. He's a top role model and a top player as well. I am in a good frame of mind. I am excited and I can't wait to get started at the World Cup."

Gerrard is still 16 caps short of the all-time record, which is held by goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
