Roberto Martinez excited by potential of John Stones

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes that John Stones should be considered one of the best young defenders in Europe.

Roberto Martinez has claimed that Everton's John Stones has proved that he is one of the finest young central defenders in Europe.

Stones, who moved to the club from Barnsley in 2013, has become a key player alongside Phil Jagielka this season, and Martinez believes that the youngster's attitude will allow him to continue his rapid rise at Goodison Park.

"The way John performs on the pitch is so stylish and elegant, which shows you a glance of the potential he has," the Toffees boss told reporters. "At the age of 20, you are not going to find a better centre-back in European football.

"I think John has got that sort of leader character and probably an Everton character. He's got an incredible belief in what he is as a footballer, and humble enough to learn every day."

Everton, who currently occupy 12th spot in the table, host Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
