Former Everton midfielder Joe Parkinson believes that hiring Roberto Martinez as the club's new manager would prove to be a "perfect match".

Former Everton midfielder Joe Parkinson believes that the club's managerial vacancy is "perfect" for Roberto Martinez.

The Spaniard is expected to hold talks with the Merseyside outfit today following his decision to leave Wigan Athletic yesterday.

Martinez will depart the DW Stadium after four years in charge, which ended with an FA Cup trophy and relegation from the Premier League.

"I think it is the perfect match for him," Parkinson told BBC Radio Five live. "If it does work out, I wish him all of the best, because he has given people a lot of chances at Wigan and he has done so well for them, apart from being relegated. It's been an achievement to stay in the Premier League so long."

Martinez is the favourite to take the reins at Everton following David Moyes's departure to Manchester United.
