Danny Philliskirk goal gives Oldham Athletic slender win against Fleetwood Town

A goal from Danny Philliskirk was enough to give Oldham Athletic their first win of the new League One campaign against visitors Fleetwood Town.

Oldham have picked up their first League One win of the season after beating Fleetwood Town 1-0 at Boundary Park.

Fleetwood started the better side, earning themselves an early corner before Antoni Sarcevic fired the ball just inches over the bar from close range.

Declan McManus saw his shot deflected over shortly after before a header from defender Stephen Jordan was saved superbly by Latics keeper Joel Coleman.

The home side then looked to have their first chance of the game, but Dominic Poleon was unable to connect with the ball and fire home.

Poleon and Mike Jones had further half-chances for Oldham midway through the first half, but Fleetwood also continued to threaten as Conor McLaughlin forced Coleman into another save.

The Latics eventually went ahead with 10 minutes to go before the half-time whistle as Danny Philliskirk slotted the ball into the back of Chris Maxwell's net after getting in behind two defenders.

Early in the second half, Fleetwood's Bobby Grant had a clear chance to equalise for the visitors, but could only power his header straight at Coleman.

A superb chance then fell to Oldham as Joseph Mills crossed for Lee Croft, but the midfielder fired the ball over the bar from just five yards away.

Latics keeper Coleman was back in action shortly after, however, and was required to push Danny Andrew's attempt wide of the post.

Substitute Jonathan Forte looked to fire on goal for the home side's second with 10 minutes to go, and while Eggert Jonsson blocked the former Barbados international's attempt, Oldham were able to hold on for victory.
