Iceland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson names Gylfi Sigurdsson and Aron Gunnarsson in their 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup despite both players being injured.

Iceland have selected Gylfi Sigurdsson and Aron Gunnarsson in their 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup despite both midfielders currently carrying injuries.

Everton's Sigurdsson has been out of action for two months with a knee problem, but has been given the chance to recover in time for the tournament.

National team captain Gunnarsson, meanwhile, is recovering after undergoing knee surgery in late April and missed Cardiff City's promotion run-in.

One notable omission from the 23-man selection named by head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson on Friday is Nantes striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, who has suffered with knee injuries over the past two seasons.

Iceland open their World Cup campaign against Argentina on June 16 before facing Nigeria and Croatia in their remaining Group D fixtures.

Iceland's final 23-man World Cup squad:

Hannes Halldorsson (Randers), Runar Runarsson (Nordsjaelland), Frederik Schram (Roskilde); Kari Arnason (Aberdeen), Holmar Eyjolfsson (Levski Sofia), Rurik Gislason (Sandhausen), Sverrir Ingason (Rostov), Hordur Magnusson (Bristol City), Birkir Saevarsson (Valur), Ragnar Sigurdsson (Rostov), Ari Skulason (Lokeren); Birkir Bjarnason (Aston Villa), Samuel Fridjonsson (Valerenga), Johann Gudmundsson (Burnley), Aron Gunnarsson (Cardiff City), Emil Hallfredsson (Udinese), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton), Olafur Skulason (Karabukspor), Arnor Traustason (Malmo); Jon Bodvarsson (Reading), Alfred Finnbogason (Augsburg), Albert Gudmundsson (PSV), Bjorn Sigurdarson (Rostov)
