Preview: Las Palmas vs. Real Betis - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Thursday's La Liga clash between Las Palmas and Real Betis, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Real Betis will look to bounce back from a narrow defeat to Mallorca when they travel to Gran Canaria for Thursday's La Liga clash with Las Palmas.

Los Verdiblancos are sitting in 11th spot with eight points to their name, while Las Palmas are propping up the standings after mustering two points from their six matches.

Las Palmas boss Luis Carrion has experienced a disappointing start to his first La Liga campaign as manager, having seen his side draw two and lose four of their opening six matches.

Carrion's side began the campaign with a draw against Sevilla and a defeat to Las Palmas, before they produced a determined display to take a point off reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid.

However, rather than build upon the 1-1 draw against Los Blancos, Las Palmas have gone on to lose three consecutive matches, including a 2-1 defeat in Saturday's away meeting with Osasuna.

Alberto Moleiro headed home in the 41st minute to cancel out Ante Budimir's penalty, but Las Palmas were unable to produce a response to Aimar Oroz's second-half effort.

Unfortunately for Carrion, he has now become the second head coach in Las Palmas' history to fail to win any of his first six La Liga games, with his poor start contributing to the club's 20-game winless league run.

As a result, the team from Gran Canaria will head into Thursday's contest with hopes of claiming their first league victory since beating Valencia 2-0 in February.

Real Betis will enter the midweek fixture in a downbeat mood after they conceded a stoppage-time goal to lose 2-1 in their recent clash with Mallorca at the Estadio Benito Vilamarin.

After beating Leganes and Getafe, Los Verdiblancos were hoping to claim a third consecutive victory in Monday's home clash, especially as they had won each of their previous five matches against Mallorca.

Giovani Lo Celso saw his seventh-minute opener quickly cancelled out by Dani Rodriguez, before Valery netted a 93rd-minute winner to snatch the three points and condemn Betis to their first home defeat of the season.

Having competed in three consecutive away games, Manuel Pellegrini's side will now head on their travels with hopes of ending a four-game winless away league run in the top flight.

Betis' first priority will be to score their first away league goal of the season, having played out a goalless with Alaves and lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in their opening two road trips in La Liga.

After failing to win on their last four trips to Estadio de Gran Canaria, Los Verdiblancos are seeking their first away win over Las Palmas since recording a 3-0 victory in a second-tier fixture in March 2015.

Team News

Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso on August 29, 2024© Imago

Las Palmas defender Scott McKenna is currently in the treatment room after sustaining a hamstring injury in training last weekend.

Marvin Park and Mika Marmol both picked up injuries in the defeat to Osasuna, ensuring that Carrion will have to make at least two changes for Thursday's fixture.

Viti Rozada is set to replace Park at right-back, while Alex Suarez is likely to start in central defence in Marmol's absence.

Oli McBurnie dropped to the bench at the weekend, but he is pushing for a recall after coming on as a half-time substitute at El Sadar.

As for the visitors, they remain without the services of Youssouf Sabaly, William Carvalho and Isco due to their respective injury issues.

Defender Marc Bartra will have be assessed ahead of Thursday's away trip, having missed the last five matches due to injury.

Jonny Cardoso has returned to training following a physical issue and is in contention to start in midfield against Las Palmas.

Pellegrini may take the opportunity to make a number of changes to freshen up his side, with Aitor Ruibal, Romain Perruad, Pablo Fornals, Juanmi and Assane Diao all in contention to start.

Las Palmas possible starting lineup:
Cillessen; Viti, Herzog, Suarez, Munoz; Munoz, Essugo, Rodriguez; Sandro, Moleiro, McBurnie

Real Betis possible starting lineup:
Silva; Ruibal, Llorente, Natan, Perraud, Cardoso, Roca; Fornals, Lo Celso, Juanmi; Diao

We say: Las Palmas 1-1 Real Betis

Las Palmas may be winless in 20 La Liga matches, but they have drawn two of their three home matches this season, and we think that they may frustrate Betis to take a point off Los Verdiblancos for the second time this year after playing out a 2-2 draw in May's home fixture.
