Rob Jones: 'Liverpool must spend'

Rob Jones says that Liverpool must bolster the squad this summer to cope with the rigours of Champions League football next season.

Former Liverpool defender Rob Jones believes that the Reds must bolster the squad this summer to cope with the rigours of Champions League football next season.

The Merseyside outfit are odds-on favourites to end a 24-year barren spell this season by winning the Premier League title.

With a spot in Europe's elite competition all but guaranteed, though, Jones says that owner John Henry must invest in the playing staff to help manager Brendan Rodgers rotate the squad when necessary.

"Everything's going our way [but] there's no talk at all of winning the Premier League yet, they are very focused on winning the next game," he told Perform.

"I think that is the best way to be, I know it's an exciting time for the fans and everyone is talking about it but at Melwood no-one is talking about it at all.

"Next year I think will be a lot more difficult, it looks like we'll be in the Champions League next year, so we need a bigger squad, we need owners to put money in to build that squad up because the Champions League definitely takes it out of the team and the squad."

Liverpool, who sit top of the table, two points clear of Chelsea, can move a step closer to the title by beating Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday.
