Live Commentary: Young Boys 3-5 Liverpool - as it happened

Follow Sports Mole's live text commentary of Liverpool's Europa League group encounter with Swiss outfit Young Boys.

Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of Liverpool's Europa League clash with Swiss outfit Young Boys.

The Premier League club kick off their Group A clash in Bern in a tough group that boasts Italian side Udinese and Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers recently claimed that the English league is the club's main priority this season but the Northern Irishman is confident that his inexperienced travelling squad has enough quality to get a result this evening.

The two sides are meeting for the first time in a European competition and both will be eager to get the first three points on the board.

.

19.55That's us wrapped up here then! Stay logged in to Sports Mole if you want to keep track of Tottenham's encounter with Lazio, which is coming up. So that's a goodbye from me and I hope you enjoyed it. Until next time!

19.53So, a promising result for Rodgers's young guns. I think I need to get my breath back! Next up for the Reds is a clash with Italian side Udinese at Anfield.

19.52So this puts the Reds at the top of Group A with maximum points, while Udinese and Anzhi sit in second and third respectively following their 1-1 draw this evening.

90+3 minsFULL TIME: Well, there you have it! I'm not sure many people would have predicted an eight-goal thriller. Liverpool have put three points on the board with a 5-3 win in the end.

90+3 minsThe referee signals three minutes of added time and while the whole game has been rather unpredictable, it seems as though Liverpool will see this out to grab the three points.

87 minsWell, that was quite a sublime shot from Shelvey, who picked up the ball from midfield and drifted away from the defender to launch the ball into the back of the net with power.

86 minsGOAL! Young Boys 3-5 Liverpool (Shelvey)

85 minsYellow card! Bobadilla gets deservedly cautioned for appealing for a penalty. The Young Boys forward claimed that he was brought down by Carragher but replays proved that he went down like a pack of cards all on his own. Tut tut

81 minsJones makes a vital save to keep his team in the lead after a powerful shot from Farnerud just outside the box. The ball was drifting to the left of the net but Jones launched just in time to push it away from goal.

80 minsYou sense that a goal could still come from anywhere in the last 10 or so minutes. I think I'd be foolish to predict the full-time score!

78 minsAnother touch-and-go moment for Liverpool there as the ball finds itself in Jones's box but Enrique does just enough to block the Young Boys attacker from getting a foot on it.

75 minsLiverpool take the lead once again! Some impressive link-up play which began with Borini after Veskovac lost the ball. Borini glided down the left-hand side to sweep the ball to Henderson, whose first-time ball allowed oncoming Shelvey to slide his shot into the back of the net.

75 minsGOAL! Young Boys 3-4 Liverpool (Shelvey)

73 minsJones saves Liverpool from conceding yet again after Gonzalez fluffs his shot, which lands comfortable in the Aussie's hands.

71 minsSuso goes for an ambitious shot after slipping past three Young Boys players but his attempt skyrockets over the bar.

69 minsBefore all the madness ensued, Jonjo Shelvey was brought on for Assaidi, while on the other side Gonzalez was brought on for Young Boys goal-scorer Zarate.

67 minsThere's a question over whether Borini got a slight touch on the ball as it found the back of the net but I think Coates will take it.

67 minsWell, it's all happening here! Liverpool were chasing the game but they've now drawn level courtesy of a Downing corner, which finds Coates on the corner of the box, who heads it down into the goal. Blimey

66 minsGOAL! Young Boys 3-3 Liverpool (Coates)

64 minsWell, that was a bit of a mess from Liverpool... Young Boys managed to break free with Zarate after the Reds failed to keep the ball. Sahin loses Zarate, who storms towards the goal and draws Jones to him but the forward just dinks the ball over the keeper to take the lead.

62 minsGOAL! Young Boys 3-2 Liverpool (Zarate)

60 minsSub! Liverpool forward Fabio Borini comes on for Pacheco.

59 minsLiverpool look nervy in their defending but Jones manages to punch the ball away and clear the danger.

58 minsEnrique gives the ball away yet again for the Reds, which prompts an angry response from his teammate Henderson. Young Boys have a corner...

57 minsThe home side are getting more on top as we near the 60-minute mark and the crowd are fully behind them. Rodgers will be hoping that his young guns don't get intimidated by this atmosphere.

54 minsSome impressive tricky play from Bobadilla allows him to leave Enrique behind but he fails to find another yellow shirt in the box.

51 minsYoung Boys equalise for the second time in this match through Ojala, who scored an own goal in the first few minutes of the clash. The Swiss sides' pressing has been worth it for the home side as a cross from the wide ranks find Ojala's head who powers it into the goal (the right one this time...)

51 minsGOAL! Young Boys 2-2 Liverpool (Ojala)

50 minsDowning finds the ball and storms down the left-hand side but the pace from his shot into the box bounces off Henderson for a goal-kick.

50 minsThe Reds are indeed under some pressure at the moment as Zarate neatly pulls away from Enrique but Sahin snatches the ball to set up a Liverpool attack.

48 minsChance! Zarate tries to put Liverpool under pressure with a shot on goal but he fluffs his shot and fails to trouble Jones.

47 minsChance! Assaidi comes inside yet again from the wing to try a shot at goal but it curves away from the posts.

46 minsYoung Boys have started off more commanding in the early stages of this second half as they try to get more service down the wing.

45 minsIt's worth noting that there have been no changes for either side during the half-time break.

45 minsAnd we're back in business! Young Boys get the second half underway in which will (hopefully) be filled with more goals!

18.56If you'd like to catch up on the main events of Liverpool's first half against Young Boys then you can read Jack Prescott's half-time report here. But make sure you return to me for the second half!

18.54Meanwhile, the Premier League's other representative Newcastle United are currently 0-0 with Maritimo at half time. You can follow the live commentary with Liam Power here.

18.50Both sides seem to be struggling to create any clear-cut chances in the final third, with Liverpool's Suso and Pacheco quite isolated. Meanwhile, Zarate's shots have been wayward thus far and Young Boys have been unable to keep long spells of possession.

18.47So, what did we all make of the first 45 minutes? I must say, it's been an enjoyable clash so far! Liverpool's young guns look composed and secure in the middle of the park but the threat from the Swiss side remains, which was evident from their equalising goal.

45 minsHALF-TIME The whistle is blown and both sides head into the dressing rooms with Liverpool leading 2-1 at the break.

42 minsChance! Farnerud hits the woodwork for the home side as the Swiss side try to respond immediately after conceding another goal.

40 minsHold on a minute, Liverpool find themselves in the lead again! Nineteen-year-old defender Wisdom, who is making his senior debut for the Reds, manages to launch himself high above his opponents from a corner kick and heads the ball into the back of the net to regain the lead.

39 minsGOAL! Young Boys 1-2 Liverpool (Wisdom)

37 minsPoor defending from Liverpool gifts Young Boys an equaliser, which Nuzzolo manages to capitalise on.

37 minsGOAL! Young Boys 1-1 Liverpool (Nuzzolo)

36 minsSuso was close to making it 2-0 to the visitors after some cute one-touch play with Assaidi. The Spaniard goes straight past the defenders and launches a sweeping left-footed shot to find Pacheco, who was facing goal but it gets cleared.

34 minsSome nervy moments for Liverpool are calmed after Spycher's free kick fails to trouble the goal after a poor-executed shot. Not great from the Swede, who ironically is famous for his left foot!

32 minsPenalty claim! Zarate looks to get brought down by Enrique in the box after some slight contact from the Spaniard on his shoulder. The goal-line official gives it! But not a penalty... He gives a free kick just outside the area.

30 minsWith Liverpool still unable to get Suso and Pacheco involved up top, you wouldn't rule out an equaliser from Young Boys. This Swiss side aren't showing too much promise as of yet but if they can find a bit of magic in the final third, there's no doubt that it'll be game on.

28 minsThe Reds are enjoying some passage play but the movement breaks up with Jose Enrique, who is sporting a newly-shaven head (in case you were interested)

27 minsLiverpool get a free kick, which Pacheco seems to have milked slightly after getting brought down by Ojala.

25 minsMinutes later, Young Boys try to capitalise on the breakdown of a Liverpool attack but an ambitious shot from Zarate does little to trouble Jones.

23 minCHANCE! Assaidi drifts into the middle to go for a shot but the ball dribbles past the outside of the post due to a deflection. The Reds fail to make the most of the corner.

22 minsWhile Liverpool look comfortable in possession in the middle of the field, the Reds haven't threatened much on goal since they went 1-0 up in the third minute. Pacheco looks a bit isolated up there.

21 minRaimondi and Nuzzolo are linking well down the left-hand side but the pair are failing to execute any damaging crosses into the box.

19 minDespite Liverpool's early control of the game, Young Boys are finding their flow a bit more as they settle into the game.

18 minYoung Boys get a free kick in Liverpool's half after Henderson brings down Zarate but it comes to nothing for the home side.

16 minYellow card! Raimondi gets booked for a dangerous challenge on Downing. The Young Boys player committed an unnecessary sliding tackle from behind on the winger. Silly mistake and he'll have to watch himself from now on.

15 minRoars from the crowd emerge every time the men in yellow and black get near the final third but Liverpool's young men have so far handled their attacks.

14 minDowning, who has been seeing a lot of the ball in these opening stages, strays into an offside position during an attack but Rodgers will be happy with what he's seen so far.

11 minPenalty claim! Farnerud tries to get a penalty for his side by claiming that he was brought down by Jamie Carragher following their break away but replays show that the referee was right to dismiss it.

11 minLiverpool get a corner following a shot from Assaidi but Downing's take fails to find a red shirt, which allows Young Boys to break...

9 minBobadilla seems to be getting the best chances for the home side, although there aren't many! The forward charges down the wing and tries to launch a shot from outside the box but it's picked up easily by Brad Jones.

7 minIt's early stages of course but Rodgers's system seems to be working well for the Reds. They look comfortable in possession and have pressed well in the times that they have lost the ball. Sahin and Henderson seem to be working well in the middle of the park.

5 minCHANCE! Minutes later, however, Young Boys find themselves down the other end of the pitch with Bobadilla, who goes for a right-footed shot at the near post but it slices past Jones.

4 minWhat an unfortunate goal to give away from the home side there. Some impressive build up play from Sahin, who lofts the ball to Downing, who blasted it into the box and Spycher fluffs his clearance to hit Ojala in the face with the ball, which bounces off into the net.

3 minGOAL! Young Boys 0-1 Liverpool (Ojala own goal)

2 minThe Reds are keeping to Rodgers's traditional short passing from the back and their Swiss opponents are allowing them space, which will suit the Merseyside club nicely.

1 minWe have an offside flag already. Young Boys snatched the ball after Liverpool's play broke up but then the ball was played to Zarate, the forward was called offside.

1 minSo here we go then! Liverpool get us underway...

17.54Worth noting that we are just five or so minutes away from kick-off! We'll see how Rodgers's young boys get on against these Young Boys...get it? Sorry, I had to throw one in there!

17.52If there are any Millwall fans among us, you may remember Josh Simpson and Scott Sutter, who have previously had stints at the Championship club but now play for Liverpool's opponents. Oooer

17.49Would you like to hear some (fun) facts? Of course you would! This is the first time the Reds have met these Young Boys in Europe. The Swiss side came up against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League playoffs in the 2010-11 season but that is the only time that they have played English opposition in a competitive setting.

17.45Nuri Sahin, who today was hailing the importance of the Europa League, will hope to control the midfield this evening. There is probably a few faces that you may not recognise. Oussama Assaidi makes his first start for the club on the wing along with 19-year-old defender Andre Wisdom. Teenage Spaniard Suso will also hope to impress his boss in Switzerland tonight.

17.44We're likely to see 18-year-old Samed Yesil at some point this evening after Rodgers hinted that the German will play some part in this evening's match. Yesil moved to Anfield this summer from Bayer Leverkusen and has already been recognised on international duty for netting two for his nation's Under-19 side during the break last week.

17.43Seventeen-year-old Raheem Sterling, who has made a quick impact at Anfield this season after launching himself into the first team has a spot on the bench.

17.42Rodgers said earlier this week that he would rest a host of first-team players and he has in fact made 11 changes from the team that drew 1-1 with Sunderland at the weekend. The only notable senior players within the side are Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson, Jose Enrique and Jamie Carragher, who captain's the side in Steven Gerrard's absence.

17.40Young Boys XI: Wolfli; Ojala, Zverotic, Spycher, Veskovac; Sutter, Farnerud, Raimondi, Bobadilla; Zarate, Nuzzol

Subs: Benito, Gonzalez, Lecjaks, Costanzo, Schneuwly, Frey, Vitkievie

17.36Liverpool XI: Jones; Enrique, Coates, Carragher, Wisdom; Henderson, Sahin, Suso; Downing, Assaidi, Pacheco.

Subs: Gulacsi, Wilson, Robinson, Sterling, Shelvey, Borini

17.33So let's focus on the Merseyside club, who have (as I'm sure you're all aware) travelled with a relatively inexperienced side for the clash tonight. So, without further ado let's get some official team news.

17.32We're also extensively covering Newcastle United's encounter with Maritimo as well as Tottenham Hotspur's meeting with Lazio at 8pm. We aren't half spoiling you here!

17.31Here we are again then! Hopefully you've recovered from this week's Champions League exploits to enjoy some Europa League action with us this evening. Here, we're focusing on Liverpool's opening group match with Swiss side Young Boys.
