Steven Gerrard: 'Manchester City win was for Hillsborough families'

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard dedicates the 3-2 win over Manchester City to the families the Hillsborough victims.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has dedicated Sunday's 3-2 win against Manchester City to the families of the Hillsborough victims.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's 25th anniversary of the tragedy that saw 96 Liverpool fans lose their lives, the skipper said that the triumph over City was achieved for everyone who was directly affected by the disaster.

The Mirror quotes Gerrard as saying: "The reason I was so emotional [after the game] was because of when the game fell. It wasn't just because it was a big match in our season.

"It was because this week is always about more than football for everyone associated with Liverpool.

"It's emotional for so many people. I'm speaking on behalf of everyone when I say the win was dedicated to the victims and families of Hillsborough. All the squad will be present at the service to pay our respects as we should."

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League, and know that victory in their remaining four games will seem them crowned as champions for first time since 1990.
