Steven Gerrard looks back 11 years to the day when he was appointed Liverpool captain.

Steven Gerrard has described his term as Liverpool captain a "huge honour" as he marks 11 years to the day when he was given the armband.

The former England international was appointed skipper under former manager Gerard Houllier, and on the same day guided the Reds to a 3-0 win over Olimpija Ljubljana in the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Now working under Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard, who has been a Liverpool player for his entire career, continues to lead the Merseyside outfit.

On Instagram, the 34-year-old wrote: "11 years ago today I became the captain of my boyhood team one of the proudest days of my career. It's a huge honour to captain this great club #YNWA."

Recently, Jordan Henderson was named as vice-captain following the departure of defender Daniel Agger.
