Steven Gerrard open to Liverpool coaching role in the future

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard hints that he is open to returning to the Merseyside club as a coach in the future.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has suggested that he would one day consider returning to the Merseyside club in a coaching capacity.

The 34-year-old will call an end to his 17-year Liverpool career on May 24, but he will play in his final home game at Anfield when the Reds take on Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The former England skipper has not given too much thought about what he might embark on when he finally hangs up his boots, but if he wants to rejoin Liverpool as a coach, he believes that he will have to earn it.

In a press conference this afternoon, Gerrard said: "I've certainly got ambitions to stay in the game. I'm currently taking out my UEFA coaching badges.

"To take a position or a role at this football club, you'd have to be good enough. You never take a role by name. You'd be very naive to take a role here just because you're Steven Gerrard or because you had a good time on the pitch."

Gerrard, who will join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in July, has won two FA Cups, three League Cups and a Champions League trophy during his time at Liverpool.
