Andy Gray slams Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge for 'letting too many people down' in recent years due to his injury problems.

Former Everton striker Andy Gray has accused Daniel Sturridge of 'letting too many people down' at Liverpool over the past few years.

Sturridge was sent on loan to West Bromwich Albion for the second half of last season after slipping down the Anfield pecking order, seeing his career stagnate due to a number of niggling injury issues.

The England international marked his competitive return to action with the Reds by netting the fourth goal in Sunday's 4-0 win over West Ham United.

Despite impressing in pre-season and working his way back into Jurgen Klopp's plans, however, Gray insists that now is not the time to get carried away about Sturridge's performances.

"No-one doubts the ability the young man's got," he told beIN SPORTS. "I have doubted his desire to put himself out there on the football pitch time and time again.

"Listen, it's a great start for him. I'm not going overboard about Daniel Sturridge but there's too many times when he's let too many people down.

"Let's wait and see. For Liverpool's sake, I hope he is the new Sturridge. I hope he has learned and I hope he does want to play in the latter part of his career time and time again."

Klopp hailed Sturridge for his "brilliant" goalscoring display from the bench against West Ham.
