Joe Allen: 'Liverpool must learn from Southampton defeat'

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen urges his side to learn from their 3-2 defeat to Southampton at St Mary's, which saw them blow a two-goal lead in the final half-hour.

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has urged his side to learn from their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday.

The Reds looked to be cruising to victory having taken a 2-0 lead into half time, but Southampton scored three times in the final half-hour to complete a memorable comeback.

It was a result that saw Liverpool beaten inside 90 minutes for the first time in 11 matches, and Allen is eager to get that run going again after the international break.

"I don't quite know. I don't know what to say really, but we are all very disappointed. To be ahead like that and then throw it away is hugely disappointing," he told the club's official website.

"Our focus has been on the run, gaining that momentum and I thought for large spells it looked like we would keep that going, but to come away with nothing... we can't look beyond that at the moment.

"We'll make sure lessons are learned and for the rest of the season we'll have to get that ball rolling and get some wins again."

The defeat leaves Liverpool seven points off the pace in the race for Champions League football.
