Liverpool full-back Martin Kelly believes that it is healthy for players to have to fight for their place in the first team.

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly has insisted that it is "great" for players to have to compete for a first-team spot.

The 22-year-old has been out of action since September, when he underwent surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament, and has since relinquished his place to full-back Andre Wisdom.

"It's always good at any club to have competition for places," the Liverpool Echo quotes Kelly as saying. "Whether you are looking to take someone's place, or you are looking behind at someone who is pushing for yours, it's always a great thing to have.

"It helps you progress as a player. At Liverpool, the competition is at its highest because it is a top club. But I can learn from everyone in the team, not just the defenders."

Kelly recently penned a fresh long-term contract at Anfield.
