Liverpool legend Jan Molby describes the decision to appoint Brendan Rodgers as a 'gamble', saying that he would have preferred an experienced manager.

Liverpool legend Jan Molby has described the club's choice to appoint Brendan Rodgers as manager as a "gamble".

Rodgers, 39, was unveiled as the new Liverpool manager earlier today, but Molby believes that the club should have appointed an experienced manager.

The former Denmark international also expressed his belief that nothing will prepare Rodgers for the size of the club or the task ahead of him.

"The fact Liverpool didn't finish in the top four spelled the end for Dalglish so he will be left in no doubt what's required. You cannot prepare people for the size of the club," Molby told BBC Sport.

"Rodgers has done a super job at Swansea playing some good football but it's a step up and expectations will be massive. I did feel personally that it was a job for an experienced manager.

"We just finished eighth in the league, a long way off the Champions League places, and it will be a difficult job. But they have gambled - they feel that Brendan is the right manager, he fits the profile, he's a young, up-and-coming manager, and wants to prove himself."

Molby spent 11 years at Anfield, winning two league titles and two FA Cups in that time.
