Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: 'Andy Carroll has nothing to prove'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists that Andy Carroll has nothing to prove when he faces his former club as a West Ham United player on Sunday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has nothing to prove against his former club this weekend.

The Reds will travel to Upton Park on Sunday to take on the Hammers, who paid the Merseyside outfit around £15m last summer for the striker's services.

Carroll made the move to London after failing to make an impact at Anfield following his £35m switch from Newcastle United in January 2011.

"I'm not sure Andy will feel he has a point to prove," Rodgers said Friday's press conference. "He knows he's a top player. West Ham paid a lot of money for him and in the style they play he's one of the best there is.

"Playing week in week out was probably the biggest factor, and it was a chance for him to do that. I don't think he has to prove anything to anyone."

Liverpool, who also offloaded Stewart Downing and Joe Cole to the Hammers last season, are currently at the top of the Premier League table with a two-point lead over Chelsea.
