Liverpool took the lead in just the second minute as Philippe Coutinho's cross found Stewart Downing in the box, and the winger nodded in from six yards out.

Coutinho was the provider for Liverpool's second as well, slipping Suarez through on goal and the Uruguayan made no mistake with his finish, calmly slotting past Ali Al-Habsi.

Wigan looked to hit back through Arouna Kone, but his shot was well saved by Pepe Reina after Liverpool had failed to clear the ball from their box.

Suarez got his second just past the half-hour mark as his free kick deflected off Shaun Maloney and past Al-Habsi.

Franco Di Santo almost got a goal back for the visitors when he peeled off his man at the back post and headed towards goal, but Reina tipped his effort over the bar.

Suarez almost claimed a first-half hat-trick when he unleashed a volley from inside the area, but his strike was beaten away by Al-Habsi.

Suarez wouldn't have to wait too much longer for his third, however, as he poked the ball underneath Al-Habsi having been found by Glen Johnson to make it 4-0.

Reina needed to be alert to keep Wigan out with just over 20 minutes on the clock as he saved Maloney's effort.

The Spaniard was called upon again in the 78th minute, this time keeping out Kone's curling effort as Liverpool held on to their clean sheet.
