Jonathan Walters double downs Liverpool

Jonathan Walters scores twice to help Stoke City to a 3-1 win over Liverpool.

Stoke City have beaten Liverpool from behind thanks to a Jonathan Walters double.

Liverpool were ahead in the first minute after Luis Suarez was brought down by Ryan Shawcross and Steven Gerrard sent Asmir Begovic the wrong way from the spot.

However, the lead lasted just three minutes and Stoke were level, Walters slotting in after a costly slip from Martin Skrtel in the box.

In the 11th minute Stoke had turned around Liverpool's early advantage as Kenwyne Jones rose highest at the near post to nod in a corner.

After 27 minutes Gerrard had a real chance to level matters, but toe-poked an effort from the edge of the box after Stewart Downing's cutback.

Liverpool had the best of the final 15 minutes but Stoke's defence remained solid until the whistle.

Early in the first half substitute Raheem Sterling cut back for Suarez, who fluffed an effort off the outside of the post.

Almost immediately at the other end it was 3-1 to Stoke. Jones slicked on a long throw to Walters, who chested down before firing a volley into the top corner.

The game turned a little scrappy as Stoke looked to shut out their visitors.

Suarez continued to trouble the Stoke backline, but could do little more than win corners as the hosts were giving up no space.
