Mark Lawrenson: 'Liverpool should sign Calum Chambers'

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that the team should sign Southampton full-back Calum Chambers.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has said that the club should try to sign Southampton full-back Calum Chambers this summer.

Brendan Rodgers's side kept just 10 clean sheets last season, allowing an average of 1.32 goals per game, placing them behind Crystal Palace and Southampton defensively.

Lawrenson told the Liverpool Echo: "[Glen] Johnson has been found out. This World Cup has exposed the defensive frailties many of his detractors have targeted in years gone by.

"But if I were Liverpool I would still want to hold on to him. At the moment there are very few players available in that position that are actually better than him.

"The best thing to do would be to get a youngster like Calum Chambers from Southampton. Give Johnson another year and allow someone like Chambers to really compete and push him for a place in the starting 11."

Liverpool have already signed striker Rickie Lambert from the Saints this summer, while Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have also been linked with a move to Anfield.
