Liverpool are reportedly preparing to finalise a new contract for captain Virgil van Dijk once they wrap up fresh terms for fellow defender Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to ramp up their contract talks with Virgil van Dijk once they have sorted new terms with Ibrahima Konate.

The Reds have entered a new era on the pitch at the start of the 2024-25 campaign, with legendary boss Jurgen Klopp leaving at the end of last season.

Taking over from the charismatic German, Arne Slot has provided a coolness on the Anfield sidelines so far, with his side picking up plenty of results.

After seven matches of the Premier League season, Liverpool are sitting pretty at the top of the league standings, one point ahead of Manchester City in second.

Following the disappointment of missing out on midfield target Martin Zubimendi over the summer, an established core of Reds stars have rallied under the reign of Slot.

Liverpool moving closer to double defender deal?

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are closing in on the announcement that one of their key defenders has agreed to fresh terms ahead of the January window.

The report claims that centre-back Konate will put pen to paper on a new contract, with the 25-year-old more than happy to remain at the Anfield club.

Once the Frenchman's contract situation is resolved, it is understood that Liverpool will turn their full focus to tying captain Van Dijk down on renewed terms.

The Dutchman supposedly wishes to remain at the centre of defence for the Reds and the Netherlands for the next two years, aiming to add more silverware to his trophy cabinet.

It is believed that Van Dijk's new terms will see him pocket £300,000 per week from the Merseyside outfit, compared to £220,000 per week in his current deal.

What about Salah, Alexander-Arnold?

Alongside Van Dijk, there are two other high-profile Liverpool stars who are hurtling towards the end of their current contracts at the club.

At this stage, both Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be free agents at the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign unless the Reds can reach an agreement with either player.

However, Slot's side have reportedly made steps forward in their hopes of committing the futures of Salah and Alexander-Arnold to the club.
