Liverpool target Joel Matip will not be made available for a transfer next month, according to Schalke 04's general manager.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen on a move for the 24-year-old, who is out of contract with the Bundesliga side next summer, as he looks for more options in defence.
Speaking to press in Germany on Thursday, Schalke GM Andre Breitenreiter said: "I can rule out a winter departure.
"I am wishing for more competition between the players in the Ruckrunde (second half of the season). We need that to maximise their performances."
Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in Matip's teammate Leroy Sane.
