Liverpool 'to complete Werner deal in August'

Liverpool are reportedly still on course to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, though a deal may not go through until August or September.

Liverpool could announce the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in "August or September", according to German football expert Raphael Honigstein.

The 24-year-old has scored a further 30 goals in all competitions this season and is believed to be a long-term target for the Reds.

Werner is said to have already held virtual talks with Jurgen Klopp over a summer transfer, though the coronavirus crisis is likely to push back the opening of the next window.

However, Honigstein insists that there is a "very strong chance" the Germany international will officially become a Liverpool player in the next four or five months.

"I think they're a bit hesitant to pull the trigger because they haven't quite figured out how much of a financial problem the coronavirus will present itself to football, coming over the next month in the Premier League," he told BT Sport.

"I think he's waiting for things to fall into shape and it could be that the transfer window is much later than usual.

"This kind of deal would have been announced in April/May, this time it could be August or September, but I still think there's a very strong chance he'll end up at Liverpool."

Werner, who scored a hat-trick for Leipzig in Sunday's 5-0 rout of Mainz, is currently available for £52m due to a clause in his contract.
