Jamie Carragher: 'Manchester City need to advance to save Manuel Pellegrini'

Jamie Carragher feels that Manchester City need to advance in the Champions League by beating Barcelona at Camp Nou to save Manuel Pellegrini's job at the club.

Jamie Carragher believes that Manuel Pellegrini's future at Manchester City will hinge on whether his side beat Barcelona to advance in the Champions League.

The Citizens' recent poor form has seen them fall six points behind leaders Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title, while their place in Europe's elite competition is in jeopardy following their 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg of their last-16 clash against the Catalan club.

Carragher feels that City need to match the exploits of Paris Saint-Germain in their progression at the expense of Chelsea for their clash at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think he's got a big problem in terms of his job. You've only got to look at the owners and how they dealt with Roberto Mancini, a man who won the league and the FA Cup.

"Pellegrini also won the league and a domestic cup in his first season. The exact same thing is happening. They're drifting in that second season. I think he's going to need a result like Laurent Blanc got.

"I think Laurent Blanc saved his job at Paris Saint-Germain in that Chelsea game. I think he's going to need something like that on Wednesday night in the Nou Camp to stay there. Who knows, he may still go after that."

Pellegrini joined City in May 2013 and won the Premier League and Capital One Cup in his first season with the club.
