How Manchester City could line up against Sheffield Wednesday

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for Wednesday's FA Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Manchester City resume their defence of the FA Cup with a visit to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday for the fifth round on Wednesday evening.

Pep Guardiola's side recently won their third consecutive EFL Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday, and will be looking to continue their dominance of the domestic cup scene in midweek.

City have recently chalked up a run of four consecutive wins in all competitions, with their EFL Cup triumph preceded by victories over Real Madrid, Leicester City and West Ham United.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how City could line up for the midweek fixture.

Pep Guardiola started several key players on the bench during Sunday's win over Aston Villa, many of whom will be vying for a place in the first XI on Wednesday.

Cup goalkeeper Claudio Bravo should start his second consecutive game, and Joao Cancelo is expected to return to the side after being left out of the EFL Cup final altogether. The Portugal international has played every minute of City's FA Cup campaign so far and could replace Kyle Walker at right-back with the Englishman playing the full 90 on Sunday.

The remainder of City's defence is likely to be in for a reshuffle, which could see the inclusion of 19-year-old Eric Garcia, who kept a clean sheet in the Citizens' 4-0 victory over Fulham in the fourth round. Fernandinho may be given a rest meaning Nicolas Otamendi could partner the young Garcia in the heart of defence.

Benjamin Mendy will be looking to replace Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, and the trio of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan seems the most likely option for Guardiola in midfield.

Three City attackers who found themselves on the bench at the weekend could all feature from the start in Wednesday's game.

Gabriel Jesus is likely to lead the line after Sergio Aguero suffered a minor knock in the cup final victory. Riyad Mahrez, who didn't play a single minute of Sunday's game, could replace Raheem Sterling out wide, with Bernardo Silva occupying the final spot in Guardiola's front three.
