Swansea City and Manchester City played out a goalless draw in their Premier League encounter at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
The hosts had the better of the first half, and would have taken a lead into the break but for Michu and Pablo Hernandez's poor finishing in front of goal.
Man City were on top in the second half and had the best chance of the match when Edin Dzeko was presented with an opening goal, only to scuff his shot wide.
You can read how the whole 90 minutes unfolded with Sports Mole's live play-by-play coverage below.
Manchester City could also be tempted to take their foot off the pedal having lost out in the title race to bitter rivals Manchester United, but Roberto Mancini's men still need to secure second place.
We'll start by looking at the hosts, who haven't had the best of times recently. Swansea haven't won any of their last six games, and have only one once - against Newcastle - since winning the League Cup back in February.
It is hard to say whether winning the League Cup has indeed had a detrimental effect on Swansea's season, but at the moment it looks like being a disappointing end to a very impressive league campaign.
Manager Michael Laudrup will be desperate to ensure that his side don't produce a feeble end to the season. Swansea may no longer be in contention for a European spot but a top-half finish will now be very high on the list of priorities at the club and, on current form, they may not achieve that.
At the end of play today, the hosts could well be in the bottom half depending on results elsewhere. However, they do have a game in hand and superior goal difference to the likes of West Ham United, Fulham and Stoke City who are just below them in the table.
Laudrup will also have one eye looking up the table at eighth-placed West Bromwich Albion. Swansea are currently six points behind the Baggies with four games left, and they will fancy their chances of catching the Midlands club if they can get a result this afternoon.
City are currently six points clear of Chelsea in the table with four games left, but Rafael Benitez's side are in need of wins to ensure that they get Champions League football next season, so a couple of bad results for Man City could see them caught by the chasing pack. You'd have to say that they are clear favourites to secure the runners-up spot, though, and their recent form doesn't point to them coming off the boil anytime soon.
City have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, with the only blip coming against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight ago. That run includes an FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea, and they will face Wigan Athletic in the final next Saturday. I hesitate to say that they would need to win that for this season to be anything less than a failure, but a club with City's financial muscle should really be winning trophies on a regular basis, and they shouldn't be losing the title by so many points.
City are currently a whopping 14 points behind rivals United in the Premier League table, although they will have a chance to reduce that deficit to 11 points this afternoon as the champions are not in action.
TEAM NEWS: The team news is in for both sides, and the hosts make just one change from their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea last week As Nathan Dyer replaces Ki Sung-Yong. City, meanwhile, make two changes as Joleon Lescott and Carlos Tevez make way for Matija Nastasic and James Milner. Full team news coming right up...
SWANSEA STARTING XI: Vorm; Rangel, Chico, Williams, Davies; Britton, de Guzman, Routledge, Dyer, Hernandez; Michu
SWANSEA SUBS: Tremmel, Tiendalli, Monk, Taylor, Agustien, Shechter, Moore
MANCHESTER CITY STARTING XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Clichy, Nastasic; Y Toure, Milner, Nasri, Barry, Silva; Aguero
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Pantilimon, K Toure, Kolarov, Garcia, Rodwell, Tevez, Dzeko
So, what can we make of those lineups? Well, there aren't many surprises in the Swansea set-up. Laudrup has had a good idea of his best XI ever since joining the club and has rarely altered that. The likes of Williams, Chico and De Guzman have been integral to his side throughout the season and they will be key if Swansea are to get anything from this one today.
Their main dangerman today will be Michu, who has had a brilliant debut season in England. With 17 league goals to his name already this campaign he was very unlucky to miss out in the PFA awards, but Laudrup and the Swansea fans know exactly how important he has been this season. Manchester City will need to keep a close eye on him this afternoon.
As for City, it is interesting that Tevez has dropped to the bench, and Aguero is likely to play up front on his own with Milner and either Silva of Nasri supporting from the wings. Mancini must have one eye on the match against West Brom on Tuesday with that selection, and I would expect Tevez to return for that one.
Even without Tevez, City have plenty of quality throughout their side. Aguero may not have quite reached the heights of last season, but there is no doubt that he is one of the top strikers in Europe on his day. Silva and Nasri have the ability to both create and score chances for the Argentinian, while Yaya Toure and James Milner are also very dangerous coming from midfield.
Swansea will have a tough time breaching the City defence too. As is the case with a few of their side, Hart and Kompany haven't had their best season but they are still among the best in their position in world football. Nastasic has also established himself as one of the brightest youngsters around this season.
So, it will be a tough test to say the least for Swansea today, but what does history tell us about this fixture?
Well, it is surprisingly even. These two sides have alternated wins between each other since they first met in 1981, with the home side coming out on top on each occasion. Should it follow that pattern, it will be Swansea's turn to win today.
Manchester City won the reverse fixture between these two sides earlier this season when Carlos Tevez grabbed the only goal of the match. However, the last time these two met here, Swansea ran out 1-0 winners courtesy of a late Luke Moore strike.
CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE: We'll just move away from the Liberty Stadium, and the Premier League as a whole, to give a quick update on what has been a crazy final day in the Championship this afternoon. Hull look destined for automatic promotion as they led Cardiff 2-1 in the 94th minute and were awarded a penalty. Amazingly, they missed that and Cardiff went up the other end and scored a penalty of their own. Hull's fate now relies on the closing stages of Watford vs. Leeds, which is currently 1-1. If Watford win, they are up, if not, Hull are.
So, we've seen an unbelievable final day in the Championship, and it isn't over just yet. City will know as well as anyone what dramas stoppage time can provide. To any City fans who are still down after losing the title to United this season, here is a little pick me up:
PREDICTION: We're 10 minutes from kickoff at the Liberty Stadium, which means that it is time for my prediction! Despite this appearing as something of a dead rubber, both sides will still have aims for the end of the season so I don't foresee this being a half-hearted game. Given the recent form, I think City will come away with all three points, so I will go for a 3-1 away win.
CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE: More drama in the Championship! The only match still playing is Watford vs. Leeds, and an automatic promotion spot rests on it, but Leeds have just gone ahead in the 90th minute. That will surely see Hull promoted to the Premier League next season.
Phew! What a day it had already been in English football, and we're not done yet! There are plenty more Premier League matches to come and I will keep you updated with goals as they fly in from around the country.
CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE: The Watford match is now OVER, so Hull will be joining these two sides in the Premier League next season. Congratulations to them!
Let's turn our attention back to the Liberty Stadium, then, and a very intriguing match awaits us here.
The teams are out and we're just about ready to go here. Swansea will need to improve their recent form to get anything out of this one.
KICKOFF: Here we go! We're underway in a sunny Swansea.
Swansea have made a good start to this match, knocking the ball around nicely and refusing to let Man City dictate the tempo in these early stages.
Michu picks up a good ball forward and he has men in support, but he fluffs his attempted back heel and the danger is cleared. Little to report from the very early stages so far but Laudrup will be happy enough with the start his side have made.
City have their first meaningful attack as Barry surges to the edge of the box before feeding Milner on the left. His cross is dangerous, but Chico gets a vital - if risky - touch to send it behind for a corner.
SHOT! The resulting corner is aimed at the man-mountain that is Yaya Toure, but Swansea clear it to the edge of the box. Samir Nasri is waiting there, but his shot goes high over the bar. He probably should have done better, but it by no means an easy chance.
Mancini's name rings around the ground from the away support. There has been some speculation surrounding his future having lost the title so emphatically to United, but he is still a popular figure amongst the club's fans.
CHANCE! City are starting to look more dangerous now and they pass the ball round inside the Swansea area looking for a chance to shoot. It eventually falls to Barry, who tries to pass the ball into the bottom right corner, but Williams is in the way to block the shot.
Joe Hart takes an age to take a goal kick as he screams at Kompany to move further up the pitch, and the home fans start to boo at the time the City keeper has taken. Surely not time wasting by the visitors?!
UPDATE: The first Premier League goal of the day has gone to already-relegated Reading. Hal Robson-Kanu's penalty has given them a 1-0 lead over Fulham.
Hernandez picks up a loose ball on the left before taking the ball past Zabaleta - no easy feat given the full-backs form this season - but his cross is poor, wasting all the good work he did to make room for it.
CHANCE! That is by far Swansea's best opening of the day, and they should have done a lot better with it. Rangel sends a perfectly weighted pass inside the full-back to find Dyer, who cuts it back to Hernandez. The Swansea midfielder is in plenty of space inside the box, but he balloons his shot over the bar.
CHANCE! The hosts have another chance! Routledge plays a lovely one-two, picking up the ball behind the defence and in the box. He struggles to get the ball under control, however, which allows Nasri to get back and clear behind for a corner. Routledge should have hit that first time.
CHANCE! The chances are coming thick and fast for Swansea at the moment! This time Dyer dinks a perfect ball into the box to find Michu unmarked about six yards out. It isn't the easiest chance to take on the volley, but I was expecting the net to ripple given Michu's form this season. He miscues his shot, though, and sends it wide.
This is a very good spell for the hosts, and City and finding it hard to cope. Swansea should be ahead, but they need to take those sorts of chances against a team of City's quality as you can be sure that they won't be as wasteful in front of goal.
De Guzman whips a deep corner into the box and Williams is waiting for it at the back post. He looks set to get his head on it, but Hart gets an important touch to put it behind for another corner.
City have really struggled to find their usual rhythm so far. They haven't threatened since Barry's tame shot early on and Swansea have been on top for most of the opening 25 minutes.
SAVE! Hernandez sends a long, sweeping ball to Dyer on the right, and the winger brings it down well. He advances to the edge of the box before passing inside to Routledge, who is forced to take a touch before firing a low effort towards goal that Hart claims comfortably.
UPDATE! There has been a goal at the Hawthorns, and it could be a big one in the relegation battle. Shane Long has given West Brom a lead against Wigan, who could really do with a win this afternoon.
Dyer just tries to poke the ball through towards Michu but Nastastic is there to block. The fans scream for a handball, but the referee waves it away, much to Michu's dismay.
CHANCE! City's best chance of the day comes through a delightful piece of play. Barry dinks a perfect pass just over the head of Williams and Nasri goes for a volley from close range. However, despite watching it the whole way, the City midfielder mis-hits his effort, making it easy for Vorm. That would have been some goal!
That was better from City, but Swansea have been very disciplined in defence so far. City are struggling to find a way through them and it's an end of season performance from the visitors at the moment.
PENALTY SHOUT! Wow, how on earth has the referee not awarded a penalty to Swansea there?! Michu nicks the ball away from Nastastic inside the box and the City defender brings the striker down in clumsy fashion. The ref says no, but the replays show that Nastastic got nowhere near the ball. That was a clear penalty, but still Swansea are yet to be awarded one this season.
City have enjoyed almost 60% of possession in the last five minutes and they have certainly started to feature more heavily in this match, but it is Swansea who have had the better chances and look most likely to score still.
CHANCE! Big chance for City, but they are denied by some brilliant defending. Silva bursts into the box but his intial shot is blocked by Williams, who then hooks it away from Silva. He can't quite clear the ball to safety, however, and eventually it falls back to Silva, who fires it goalwards from close range, but this time it is Vorm who is there to save the day, smothering the shot.
There will be just one minute of added time at the Liberty Stadium. Meanwhile, City have a free kick about 40 yards from goal after a poor tackle by Williams.
HALF TIME: Swansea 0-0 Manchester City
The referee brings an eventful half to an end, but despite all the chances it remains 0-0. Swansea should be ahead at the break, but City started to look bright towards the end of the half after a lacklustre opening.
Swansea have had the best of the chances, with Pablo Hernandez and Michu both guilty of missing when they should have scored. City left gaping holes in their defence on a number of occasions, but Swansea were not clinical enough to take full advantage.
However, City did have a couple of chances of their own towards the end of the half. Samir Nasri mis-hit a volley from close range after a delightful pass from Gareth Barry, while David Silva was denied twice in quick succession, first by Ashley Williams and then by Michel Vorm.
There was also a bit of controversy in that first half as Swansea really should have had a penalty. Michu lifted the ball over Nastastic in the area and the City man clearly brought the Spaniard down with a clumsy challenge. The referee waved it away, however, and I can only assume that he thought Michu was no longer in control of the ball. It looked like a clear penalty to me.
UPDATE: Moving away from the Liberty Stadium briefly, there hasn't been much going on elsewhere in the Premier League. Wigan have equalised against West Brom thanks to Arouna Kone and Reading still lead Fulham 1-0 but, other than that, every game remains 0-0.
Back to Wales, and it will be interesting to see how these teams come out for the second half. Laudrup will want more of the same from his side, but he will be more aware than anyone that City were finding their feet in the match towards the end of the first half. He will be frustrated that his side aren't in the lead, but if they continue to create chances then a goal should come.
Mancini, meanwhile, will not have been happy with his side for much of that first half. He will want them to pick up where they left off at the end of the half rather than repeating what was a very lacklustre performance for the first half an hour or so. He will still be confident of coming away from this one with three points, especially considering the options he has on the bench.
MANCHESTER CITY SUB: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has made a change at half time, bringing on Edin Dzeko for Yaya Toure, and we're told that it is tactical not due to injury.
KICKOFF: We're back underway at the Liberty Stadium as Man City restart the match.
Routledge sends a cross into the box, but it is drifting harmlessly wide before Nastastic gets a touch to concede an unneccesary corner. He isn't happy that he didn't get a shout from his teammate.
Swansea's corner comes to nothing and City immediately look to break away. Silva lends the ball to Dzeko before receiving the return pass. He shapes to shoot from the edge of the box but instead plays a wonderful reverse pass to Aguero, but the striker chooses not to hit it first time and is tackled.
City are certainly looking a lot brighter at the start of this second half than they did at the start of the first. Zabaleta slips a pass to Barry, who reaches the byline before pulling it into the middle, but his cross is cleared.
Michu thinks that he is clean through on goal as he chases down a long ball, but the linesman puts his flag up very late. It is a correct decision, but that late flag gave the home fans some cruelly false hope.
Silva is involved in everything good that City are doing at the moment. This time he whips a dangerous ball into the box towards Aguero, but Williams is well positioned to turn it behind for a corner.
UPDATE: The race to avoid the drop takes another twist as West Brom regain the lead against Wigan Athletic. It was Gareth McAuley who got the goal, and Wigan are really up against it now.
UPDATE: Things go from bad to worse for Wigan as Aston Villa take the lead against Norwich! Gabriel Agbonlahor got the goal, and what a big goal it could prove to be.
City patiently knock the ball around in midfield, probing for a way through the disciplined banks of four of Swansea. Eventually Barry tries an ambitious ball to Aguero, but he puts just too much on it and it goes out for a goal kick.
Man City have dominated the ball in this second half and Swansea are struggling to reach the same standard of play that they were producing in the first half.
PENALTY SHOUT! It's Manchester City's turn to have a penalty shout, and it is another strong one. Dzeko pokes the ball past Chico, who goes to ground very early, inviting Dzeko to go over his outstretched leg. The striker obliges, but the ref waves the penalty claim away. That was a close one, but he probably should have given the spot kick there.
SHOT! Dyer works the ball out wide to Hernandez, who cuts inside on his right to try to curl a shot into the top corner. He works space to shoot well enough, but his effort goes harmlessly over the bar.
SWANSEA SUB: Michael Laudrup makes his first change of the day as Routledge is replaced by Kemy Agustien.
UPDATE: More drama in the West Brom vs. Wigan match as the Latics have equalised again! James McArthur has made it 2-2 at the Hawthorns. Reading have also doubled their lead against Fulham, Hal Robson-Kanu getting his second of the game.
The ball is lifted forward towards Michu and the striker puts pressure on Nastastic before pulling up. He must have tweaked something there as he didn't make any attempt to chase the City defender down.
SWANSEA SUB: Indeed, there is the sub as Michu comes off to be replaced by Luke Moore, who scored the winner last time these two met here.
SHOT! Dzeko tries to find a spark of inspiration in this match as he cuts inside from the left flank, working space to shoot on his stronger right foot. His shot does not lack power, but he can't keep it down as it flies over Vorm's bar.
UPDATE: Fulham have pulled a goal back against Reading through Bryan Ruiz. It is 2-1 in that game now.
The home fans have taken to mocking the away team as this match enters a bit of a lull. They taunt the City fans with the chant "You're no champions anymore".
UPDATE: This relegation battle just keeps on providing drama. Aston Villa have now surrendered their lead against Norwich as Grant Holt scores a penalty to level the scores at 1-1.
Kompany is livid with the referee after conceding a free kick right on the edge of the box. The City skipper appeared to use his strength to ease Dyer away from the ball, which I would call good defending but the ref has adjudged to be a foul. Very good position for Swansea from this free kick...
The wall takes an age to get back to the required 10 yards, and De Guzman has a long time to think about what he wants to do with it, but he ultimately sends the free kick high over the bar.
MANCHESTER CITY SUB: Sergio Aguero hasn't been at his best this afternoon and he is subbed off for the final 10 minutes or so. Things gets no easier for Swansea, however, as he is replaced by Carlos Tevez.
UPDATE: There have been more goals at Craven Cottage and Reading now lead Fulham 3-2. Adam Le Fondre gave the Royals a 3-1 lead but Bryan Ruiz has just doubled his personal tally for the day to bring it back to 3-2.
Swansea have been chasing the ball and chasing shadows for much of this second half, but their defensive performance has been very disciplined. City have not been anywhere near their free-flowing best, but Swansea deserve credit for not allowing them to be.
WHAT A MISS! Oh my word what a chance that is for Edin Dzeko! Tevez slides the ball into Zabaleta, who only just reaches the ball in time to pull it back into the middle. Dzeko is unmarked about six yards from goal with the whole net to aim at, but he doesn't get his feet sorted in time and sends it wide. That was probably easier to score!
AND ANOTHER! This time it is Silva who misses a great chance! Dzeko tries to atone for his earlier miss, but his shot is blocked. The ball falls to Silva about 10 yards from goal, but he curls his shot a yard or two wide of the target. He should have at least made Vorm work there.
MANCHESTER CITY SUB: That is Silva's last action too. He looks a disconsolate figure as he trudges off the field to be replaced by Jack Rodwell.
SWANSEA SUB: Swansea make a change of their own as Dwight Tiendalli replaces Nathan Dyer for the final stages.
UPDATE: Amazingly, Wigan have now taken the lead against West Brom through Callum McManaman. Could they pull off yet another great escape?! Elsewhere, Reading have extended their lead over Fulham once again, Jem Karacan making it 4-2 to the Royals.
UPDATE: You just can't write this stuff! Aston Villa have now taken the lead against Norwich through Agbonlahor's second of the match. This relegation battle looks set to go to the final day.
Back at the Liberty Stadium, we will have three minutes of added time as this match looks set to drift out into a goalless draw.
SAVE! Vorm is forced into a rare save in the closing stages as Dzeko glances a header towards the bottom corner. The ball bounces just in front of Vorm, which makes it harder to collect, but it is still fairly comfortable for the Dutchman.
FULL TIME: Swansea 0-0 Manchester City
The referee brings an end to a pretty dull encounter between these two sides. The second half in particular had the feel of an end-of-season match with very little riding on the result for either side. There were chances, and this match really shouldn't have ended goalless, but both managers will be content with a point this afternoon.
Swansea certainly had the better of the first half as Manchester City really struggled to get going. Michu and Pablo Hernandez both squandered very good chances for the hosts, the latter in particular was guilty of missing a couple of promising opportunities. City did start to find their feet towards the end of the first half, but they would have been relieved to reach the break all square.
The second half was all Manchester City in terms of possession, but they couldn't break down a spirited Swansea defence. The best chance of the match fell to Edin Dzeko late on, and the striker will still be wondering how he didn't convert it with the goal gaping, while Silva also missed a great chance just moments later.
In the end, a draw was a fair result and it isn't a bad point for either side. City still have a comfortable gap separating them from third-placed Chelsea, while a point for Swansea against a team of Manchester City's calibre has to be regarded as a decent result.
Right, that's it from me this afternoon! Thank you for joining Sports Mole for today's game between Swansea and Manchester City, I'm sorry we couldn't bring you any goals! If you still haven't had your fix of live football, Tottenham vs. Southampton kicked off half an hour late today, so you can follow the closing stages of that one here. Alternatively, you can follow Arsenal's match against QPR here. Be sure to stick around for the match report, reaction and analysis, all of which will be on site shortly! Goodbye!
