Real Madrid reportedly plan to move for Manchester City's Erling Braut Haaland in 2024, in spite of his €200m (£177.1m) release clause now being null and void.

Real Madrid reportedly still harbour ambitions of signing Manchester City marksman Erling Braut Haaland in the summer of 2024.

Los Blancos were one of several teams vying for the signature of the Norway international last year, but Man City moved quickest to trigger the €60m (£53.1m) release clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract.

Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm since touching down in Manchester for a bargain fee, scoring a remarkable 47 goals in 40 appearances this season, in addition to contributing six assists.

The 22-year-old scored his 31st and 32nd top-flight goals of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win over Leicester City, seeing him equal Mohamed Salah's record for the most goals in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

Away from the Premier League, Haaland has racked up 11 goals in the Champions League, as Manchester City travel to face Bayern Munich in Wednesday's quarter-final second leg with a 3-0 lead from last week's showdown at the Etihad Stadium.

The treble is still on for Pep Guardiola's side, who thumped Burnley 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - with Haaland scoring a hat-trick - to set up a Wembley encounter with Sheffield United in the final four.

The striker is under contract at Man City until the end of 2026-27 season, but his long-term future has been called into question over the past few months, as his deal apparently included a €200m (£177.1m) release clause.

However, it has since been reported that Guardiola's contract extension has rendered Haaland's release clause null and void, meaning that interested clubs will have to directly negotiate a fee with Man City.

Nevertheless, Fichajes claims that Real Madrid have not given up hope of prising Haaland away from the Etihad next summer as they prepare for life without leading marksman Karim Benzema.

Los Blancos believe that the 22-year-old could emulate Benzema and spearhead their attack for the next decade, but it is unclear whether he would be open to a change of scene in Madrid.

As things stand, Real Madrid are at risk of losing Benzema for nothing at the end of the season, as the Ballon d'Or winner is yet to extend his contract beyond June.

However, the ex-France international is widely expected to pen a one-year renewal - which would keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu beyond his 36th birthday - in the coming weeks.

Benzema remains a prolific presence in Carlo Ancelotti's squad with 26 goals from 34 games this season, but he has struggled with a bout of niggling injuries and will likely call time on his Blancos career in 2024 if a replacement is signed.

Real Madrid also continue to be credited with an interest in Kylian Mbappe, who snubbed the Spanish champions last year to unexpectedly sign a two-year contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain with an option until 2025.

Mbappe has hinted that he will not consider an exit from the Parc des Princes this summer, but he could also be on the move in 2024 if his 12-month option is not triggered.
