Micah Richards "astonished" Manchester City did not sign a striker over summer

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards is "astonished" that his former club did not sign a new striker over the summer.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has said that he was "astonished" his former club did not sign a new centre-forward during the summer transfer window.

Sergio Aguero is again on the sidelines through injury, while Gabriel Jesus has only just recovered from the issue that made him unavailable for selection in the early stages of the campaign.

Jesus was again on the scoresheet against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, with Pep Guardiola's side coming from behind to share the points on home soil.

Richards, though, has admitted that he could not believe a new striker did not arrive at the club over the summer.

"I think they need a striker. Aguero has been injured constantly for the last couple of seasons, Jesus picked up an injury and it looks like he's now going to be back and fit to play today," Richards told Sky Sports News ahead of the clash with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

"I'm astonished that Man City, given the calibre of the club, have not gone out and bought a top, top striker - especially with everyone else strengthening."

Aguero's existing deal with the Citizens is due to expire next June.
