Stuart Pearce names Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs as captain of the Team GB Olympic football team.

Stuart Pearce has named Ryan Giggs as captain of the Team GB football team for the upcoming Olympic Games.

A statement on the Football Association's website confirmed that Pearce had selected Giggs, 38, who has never played at an international tournament before.

Giggs said: "Obviously I have experience and there are a lot of younger players in this squad. As captain, hopefully I can pass that on to them."

The Manchester United left-winger is one of the three "over-age" players permitted under the Olympic football tournament rules.

Fellow Welshman Craig Bellamy and Manchester City's right-back Micah Richards are the other two.

Pearce's side will play their first match against Brazil at Middlesbrough's Riverside stadium on Friday, July 20.
