Angel di Maria: 'My relationship with United boss Louis van Gaal didn't work'

Angel di Maria admits that part of his reason for leaving Manchester United was that his relationship with manager Louis van Gaal was 'not great'.

Angel di Maria has admitted that his poor relationship with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal contributed to his decision to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

The Argentine became the Premier League's record signing when he joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid for a £59.7m fee in the summer of 2014.

However, the 27-year-old and his family failed to settle in the North-West of England and just 12 months later sealed a switch to Paris Saint-Germain.

"Honestly, [my family and I] were not happy," The Mirror quotes Di Maria as saying. "At the beginning, we were a little, but then things became complicated.

"Life in England was a bit difficult. It is not easy for a South American. Some people get on fine, and for others it is harder to adapt.

"I didn't have a great relationship with the coach, so I think the decision to join Paris was the best solution."

Di Maria also claimed that an attempted break-in at his home in January meant that it was not "reasonable" to stay at the club.
