Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to win his 1000th game in charge of Manchester United when they take on Southampton on Sunday.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful of winning his 1000th game in charge of the English giants when they take on Southampton on Sunday.

United's away clash against the Saints will be a milestone for the Scotsman, and he is keen on garnering their second successive victory in the Premier League this season.

"I could never imagine how long I would be at the club or that I would be looking forward to my 100th game," Ferguson is quoted as saying in The Daily Mail.

"It may be a special occasion but it's just another game that I want to win."

Ferguson has been at the helm of United since 1986 and said that he is proud to have worked with a whole host of great players over the years.

"There have been so many wonderful players at the club and it has been a pleasure and an honour working with them," said the 70-year-old.

"There's nothing I like better than to pull my car into the training ground of a morning and look forward to another few hours working with them and my staff.

"Any manager would be thankful to remember one great squad; I've had five or six."

United lost 1-0 to Everton in their opening league game of the season but bounced back with a 3-2 home win against Fulham last weekend.
