Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that vile and racist chanting will be difficult to stamp out following an alleged case involving Rio Ferdinand.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that issues of unsavoury chanting will always crop up within football.

The Scotsman's defender Rio Ferdinand is alleged to have been the subject of racist songs from a group of England fans during the Three Lions' 8-0 win over San Marino on Friday.

"It's a modern society, I'm afraid, that we live in," Ferguson said in a press conference. "Supporters react to many things, and I don't think we can change that."

Ferdinand's brother Anton, who is currently on loan at Bursaspor from Queens Park Rangers, is also said to have been targeted by supporters during the World Cup qualifier.
