Vincent Kompany was a Manchester United target?

Vincent Kompany was a Manchester United target in the summer of 2004, according to a document in Sir Alex Ferguson's new book.

A document in Sir Alex Ferguson's new book has suggested that Vincent Kompany was a Manchester United target in the summer of 2004.

On the sheet, Kompany, who is now the captain of United's rivals Manchester City, is named on a list of transfer possibilities alongside Philippe Mexes, Gabriel Heinze and Gerard Pique - the latter two of whom ended up signing on at Old Trafford.

However, Kompany, then of Anderlecht, did not make the switch and he remained with his hometown club until 2006 when he joined Bundesliga outfit Hamburg.

The centre-back then arrived in East Manchester two years later, having reportedly set the Citizens back £6m.
