Rooney: 'Man Utd are title challengers'

Wayne Rooney is confident that Manchester United will be challenging for the Premier League title this season, although they currently sit five points off the pace.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has claimed that he and his teammates are good enough to fight for the Premier League title this season.

Jose Mourinho's side are currently five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City after winning four, drawing two and losing two in the top flight.

The club have recorded just one win in their last five league matches, and Rooney is struggling to get in the team having started on the bench in the last four games in all competitions.

The 30-year-old was left out of the starting XI for Monday night's goalless draw with Liverpool, but he could return to the lineup for Thursday's Europa League group game against Fenerbahce at Old Trafford.

"Of course I want to play - I just have to keep working and get into the team," The Mirror quotes Rooney as saying. "I'm sure my chances will come, then it is up to me to take them. I have to try and do my job for the team and wait for my chance.

"I like to think I can play every game, but obviously it's the manager's decision and I respect that. I will be ready when I'm needed.

"I think we'll be challenging [for the title] this season. We've still got that belief and it is even stronger after working with this manager and the players over the last few months. I think we've got a fantastic squad, that is ready and capable of challenging."

After taking on Fenerbahce, United will face Chelsea in the league and then Manchester City in the EFL Cup.
