Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is expected to return from injury ahead of schedule.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has returned to light training ahead of schedule, according to a report.

The England forward took part in some outdoor running and ball work this week for the first time since suffering a gashed right thigh against Fulham last month.

Rooney's wound is still dressed, but he is able to work with United coaching staff separate from the first team, Goal.com reports.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that the 26-year-old will be fit for the Champions League clash with Galatasaray next Wednesday, ahead of a Premier League return against Liverpool the following weekend.

Rooney picked up the injury, which required 11 stitches, when he collided with Hugo Rodallega.
