Wayne Rooney believes that he and his fellow players need to behave 'responsibly' when using social network site Twitter.

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has called on his fellow professionals to live up to people's "expectations" when using social network site Twitter.

Two Chelsea players, Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand, have been at the centre of controversy surrounding social media in recent weeks as both have aired their respective frustrations publicly.

"Players have responsibilities, whether on social network sites or in life," said Rooney. "We have to live up to those expectations.

"There have been isolated occasions this week but we are well aware how we need to conduct ourselves. Whatever I tweet goes out to the world. I try to say what I'd say in a TV interview."

The Football Association have opted to bring in a code of conduct that all players must abide by.
