Ryan Giggs says that he feels a "little bit sorry" for Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, who is struggling to keep a first-team place.

Ryan Giggs has admitted that he 'feels a bit sorry' for Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney, who is struggling for first-team action for both club and country.

The 30-year-old was dropped to the bench by England interim manager Gareth Southgate for Tuesday night's goalless draw with Slovenia.

Rooney has also been among the substitutes in United's last three games under Jose Mourinho.

"I feel a little bit sorry for him," Giggs told ITV. "Towards the end of last season and for England in the summer he was played in that deeper role, then he was told he's playing as a number nine or a number 10. He's probably a bit confused.

"The only way he can get it back is on the training pitch. I don't see him playing in a specific position, he's got the talent to play so many positions, and the experience."

Rooney will hope to return to United's lineup for Monday night's showdown against Liverpool at Anfield.
