Benfica are reportedly in discussions with highly-rated midfielder Joao Neves over a new deal with the club despite ongoing interest from Manchester United.

Benfica have reportedly opened discussions with highly-rated midfielder Joao Neves over a new deal with the club despite ongoing interest from Manchester United.

The 19-year-old is widely considered to be one of the brightest young prospects in Europe, and reports in recent weeks have linked the midfielder with a potential move to the Premier League in January.

Neves has established himself as a regular under Roger Schmidt and has already featured in 25 matches across all competitions for Benfica this season.

According to a report from O Jogo, Benfica have no intention of parting ways with Neves and have already kicked off contract extension talks with the player's entourage.

The report adds that the teenager signed a long-term contract with the club in August this year, which ties him down until June 2028 and includes a release clause of around £87m.

However, this new contract extension is believed to include terms that will see the player's release clause rise to £130m, which would make him the most expensive player in Premier League history if The Red Devils decide to pursue their target.

Neves has effectively filled the role left vacant by Enzo Fernandez following the Argentina international's big-money move to Chelsea last summer.

The teenager has made 45 appearances for Benfica, and his impressive performances have already earned him three caps for the Portuguese national team.
