Liverpool are reportedly still leading the race for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner and remain optimistic of signing him despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool are reportedly still optimistic about completing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner when the transfer window reopens, despite the coronavirus pandemic throwing clubs' summer plans into disarray.

The Germany international is understood to be Jurgen Klopp's top transfer target, having enjoyed another prolific campaign which has seen him score 27 goals and create 12 more in just 36 appearances across all competitions.

Werner's current contract at Leipzig contains a release clause in the region of £50m, making him a relatively cheap option compared to forwards with a similar strike rate.

A number of other clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona, have been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old, but The Express reports that Liverpool are still at the front of the queue.

Werner is reportedly happy to move to Anfield despite knowing that he will be in competition for places with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

However, Leipzig's sporting director Markus Krosche recently suggested that Werner could still stay with the Bundesliga outfit due to the knock-on effect of the coronavirus stoppage on clubs' finances.
