Liverpool are reportedly ready to trigger the £43m release clause in the contract of 17-year-old Barcelona midfielder Gavi.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to trigger the €50m (£42.6m) release clause of Barcelona midfielder Gavi.

The 17-year-old has emerged as one of the most promising youngsters in world football this season, breaking into the Barcelona first team and making 20 appearances across all competitions so far.

Gavi has also already been capped four times for Spain, and is regarded as one of the stars of the future by a host of Europe's top clubs.

Barcelona remain desperate to keep hold of their young players as they attempt to rebuild under new boss Xavi, but Gavi's release clause of less than £43m is attractive to a number of teams.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have all been credited with an interest in the Spain international, and El Nacional reports that Liverpool have now joined the race as well.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for midfield reinforcements following Georginio Wijnaldum's exit last summer, and the Reds reportedly see Gavi as a bargain signing due to his current ability and potential to improve.

Barcelona's exit from the Champions League at the group stage has reportedly forced them to put contract talks with a number of players - including Gavi - on hold due to financial issues.

The report claims that Gavi would be tempted by a move to Anfield due to the opportunity to play under Klopp and the increased likelihood of winning trophies, in addition to a pay rise on Merseyside.
