PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands suggests that Liverpool would be an ideal club for Cody Gakpo in the future.

PSV Eindhoven sporting director Marcel Brands has tipped Liverpool to consider an approach for Cody Gakpo.

Throughout the summer transfer window, the forward was heavily linked with a switch to the Premier League with Manchester United, Leeds United and Southampton all credited with an interest.

While Leeds were said to be prepared to push through a deal during the final days of that period, a broken-down switch to Old Trafford has been spoken about on more than one occasion.

As recently as last month, the Netherlands international spoke to The Times, commenting: "I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United".

"In the end the deal didn't go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club."

The 23-year-old has continued to be linked with a future transfer to England having maintained his sparkling form in the Eredivisie and Europa League.

Gakpo has posted outstanding figures of 12 goals and 14 assists from 18 starts, and there will numerous interested onlookers when he represents his country at the upcoming World Cup.

However, despite not making a formal move for Gakpo earlier this year, Brands - formerly of Everton - has claimed that he would not be surprised if Liverpool involved themselves in the race for PSV's most prized asset.

Speaking to ESPN, Brands said: "Liverpool is a club that is always very focused. Sometimes they get players for the next season in November.

"Would they be a good partner to send Gakpo in the summer? Yes, that's right."

Despite returning to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, Liverpool remain off the pace in the Premier League.

The Merseyside giants currently sit in eighth position in the standings, still seven points adrift of their North London hosts from the weekend.

If every attack-minded player is available, Jurgen Klopp is well stocked for options in the final third, but Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have spent a significant portion of the campaign on the sidelines through injury.

As it stands, Roberto Firmino's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but the Brazilian is allegedly keen to extend his stay at Anfield.
