Christian Pulisic reportedly chose to move to Chelsea rather than Manchester United because his father was critical of Jose Mourinho's failure to promote youth players.

Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic is believed to have turned down a move to Manchester United because his father disliked Jose Mourinho.

The American international, seen by many as a replacement for Eden Hazard, joined the Blues in January of this year from German side Borussia Dortmund for £58.7m.

Pulisic's former coach at Brackley Town, Robin Walker, told the Daily Telegraph that the Portuguese manager's failure to promote youth players cost United the chance to beat Chelsea to his signature.

Walker said: "His father couldn't stand Mourinho, because he didn't promote young players. It was at that point I asked: 'What about London? That's where it's at.'

"I was trying to sell the city. His agent agreed, saying: 'When you make these decisions, it's all about investment and property.'"

The 20-year-old has featured in all three of Chelsea's games this season, coming off the bench against United and starting both the European Super Cup tie with Liverpool and Frank Lampard's first home game as manager against Leicester City.
