Preview: Manchester United Women vs. Tottenham Hotspur Ladies - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Women's Super League clash between Manchester United Women and Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Title-chasing Manchester United Women will look to claim a seventh consecutive victory in all competitions when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur Ladies to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

Spurs, meanwhile, are battling to remain in the top flight, and they will be aiming to end a four-game winless run.

Man United showcased their title credentials to come from behind on two occasions to beat Aston Villa 3-2 last weekend.

Leah Galton cancelled out Rachel Daly's ninth-minute opener, but the Aston Villa striker scored her second goal of the game before half time to restore her side's slender advantage.

Nikita Parris found an equaliser just after the hour mark and with the contest heading towards a draw, Millie Turner headed home a 93rd-minute winner to snatch three crucial points.

Although the Red Devils are sitting at the top of the Women's Super League summit, the title race is currently in the hands of third-placed Chelsea, who are four points behind Man United and have played two games fewer.

Marc Skinner's side know that they will need to win their final three league fixtures against Spurs, Manchester City and Liverpool if they are to have a realistic chance of winning the WSL title for the very first time.

Spurs are currently battling for their WSL survival, and they head into the weekend just three points clear of basement side Reading, who they will face next weekend.

Tottenham have failed to win any of their previous four matches, but they have managed to avoid defeat in their last two games.

After playing out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Aston Villa, Spurs picked up another point last weekend courtesy of a 2-2 draw against relegation rivals Brighton & Hove Albion.

The two sides went into the break on level terms after Beth England cancelled out Elisabeth Terland's opener, before Lee Geum-min restored Brighton's narrow advantage in the 62nd minute, but England wrapped up her brace with 12 minutes remaining to ensure that the spoils were shared.

After playing consecutive home games, Spurs will now head on their travels, where they will be looking to avoid a fifth straight away defeat.

Team News

Manchester United Women's Vilde Boe Risa celebrates scoring their first goal with teammates on February 26, 2023© Reuters

Man United are unable to call upon Maria Thorisdottir and Lisa Naalsund due to injury issues, but the latter is closing in on a return to team training.

Vilde Boe Risa could be brought into the side to replace Katie Zelem, who will serve a one-match suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards.

Despite coming off the bench to score the winner against Aston Villa, Turner may have to settle for a place among the substitutes, with Aoife Mannion and Maya Le Tissier expected to continue in the centre of the Man United backline.

As for the visitors, long-term absentees Ellie Brazil and Kyah Simon remain unavailable, while Nikola Karczewska is a doubt due to a groin problem.

Tottenham interim boss Vicky Jepson has confirmed that Ramona Petzelberger will feature in the matchday squad for the first time since September after recovering from injury.

England has scored eight goals in nine WSL appearances since joining Tottenham in January, and she will be looking to add to her tally when she leads the line on Sunday.

Manchester United Women possible starting lineup:
Earps; Batlle, Le Tissier, Mannion, Blundell; Boe Risa, Ladd; Parris, Toone, Galton; Russo

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies possible starting lineup:
Spencer; Neville, Turner, Bartrip, Harrop; Bizet, Summanen, James, Ayane; Spence, England

We say: Manchester United Women 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur Ladies

Man United know that they cannot afford to drop points on Sunday if they wish to win the WSL title, and we think that they will make light work of a Tottenham side who have lost their last four away matches.
