Tuesday's EFL Cup third-round tie between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle United is postponed due to extensive flooding to the League Two side's ground.

The EFL Cup third-round tie between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle United has been postponed due to "extensive overnight flooding".

Having overcome Ipswich Town in the previous round, there has been excitement over the League Two side welcoming another Premier League side to their Plough Lane stadium.

However, just under 36 hours before the fixture was due to be played on Tuesday night, the decision has been taken to postpone the game.

In a statement on X, the Dons said: "We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night's Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.

"More information will follow in due course regarding fixture rearrangement. The stadium is closed until further notice."

Although yet to be confirmed by AFC Wimbledon, a video by X user Sam Neve shows the extent of the damage to the pitch and surrounding area.

Rain has battered large parts of England since Saturday evening and although London may not see as much on Monday, a band of rain is still due later in the day.

Wimbledon face the prospect of considerable disruption to their schedule with their next two matches also due to be played at Plough Lane.

Accrington Stanley should be the visitors in a League Two clash on Saturday, with an EFL Trophy tie against Crewe Alexandra on the agenda three days later.

What next for Newcastle?

Newcastle had been due to travel to the capital for the second time in the space of three days having lost 3-1 at Fulham on Saturday.

Despite naturally wanting to play Tuesday's game, Eddie Howe and his side now have extra preparation time ahead of hosting Manchester City in the Premier League in what is Saturday's early kickoff.

With the fourth round due to be played during the final week of October, the EFL must find a suitable date to reschedule the postponed fixture before then.
